COPKIT is looking for new Ethical and Societal Impact Advisory Board Members

The use of new information and communication technologies by organised crime and terrorist groups, or criminal individuals is a key challenge for policymakers and Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs).

In this context, the EU funded COPKIT project is developing data-driven policing technologies to support LEAs in preventing crime and terrorism.

Nevertheless, the use of technology by LEAs raises several ethical, legal and societal questions with serious implications for the relationship between LEAs and citizens.

COPKIT is conducting an integrated data protection and ethical impact assessment (E+PIA) to avoid misuse of the developed policing tools and to ensure that its technologies and applications comply with ethical principles and relevant national, Union and international legislation, including the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the European Convention on Human Rights and its Supplementary Protocols.

COPKIT is now looking for new members to join its Ethical and Societal Impact Advisory Board (ESIAB) to support the project’s development in addressing ethical, legal and societal challenges related to the envisioned use of COPKIT as a law enforcement investigation tool.

We are interested in collaborating with experts in ethics, ethics of technology, human rights, privacy, security and data management with interest in policing. Experts from other disciplines (e.g., law, social sciences, IT, trustworthy AI) and CSOs are also welcome to join the ESIAB.

What ESIAB Members do:

  • support the project in managing the ethics, privacy, legal and societal issues that could arise along the project, both on the development and the performance of COPKIT, paying special attention to the “Privacy by Design” principle;
  • provide guidance on ethical, legal and societal issues related to the COPKIT tools;
  • participate in COPKIT workshops and webinars;
  • provide feedback on project deliverables.

If you would like more information about the project or about the role of ESIAB members, please contact our team at copkit@copkit.eu.
